A Brother I Must Be

A Song by Edward Waters
(Copyright © February 1988)

It's been shown to me:  A brother I must be,
And laugh or cry with those in joy or tears.[1]
So, in my love for you, I'll do what I may do:
A hand of strength, a whisper in God's ear.

Some men can pray as in a war.
Some eyes can see forevermore.
I've so much less, and yet what's mine I share:
A heart of love and care.

I feel the pain you feel,[2] the things that seem most real,
The things that show you're still in mortal lands;
And in this hurt I pray as only hurting may
To Him who holds us in immortal hands.

Some men can pray as in a war.
Some eyes can see forevermore.
I've so much less, and yet what's mine I share:
A heart of love and care.

Though God has let me feel, your wounds are His to heal.
He alone is the Physician of the Soul.
But as a child of His, I can still be this:
An ear, a word, a presence you can hold.

Some men can pray as in a war.
Some eyes can see forevermore.
I've so much less, and yet what's mine I share:
A heart of love and care.

It's been shown to me:  A brother I must be.
